An Update from the Argo on Covid-19 (March 20)
To the Argo community:

We hope you are well and holding up well in these trying times. Given the public health situation around Covid-19, we’ve decided to move to reduced hours until further notice. We will be open 12-3 PM Monday through Friday.

During those hours, we will be offering curbside pickup of books, for those who wish to reserve books or place orders in advance through our website www.argobookshop.ca or over the phone. We accept tap payments and you can just receive your books! We are also offering gift certificates you can buy through our site, and we’re still shipping books out, if you prefer. You can also come in and browse during that time, but given the cozy size of the store, we are limiting customers to 2 at a time.

We are offering events online, including our book club discussion next Thursday at 7, now being joined by author Kai Cheng Thom. We’re also launching a new discussion series of reading the Japanese Classics one chapter at a time, starting with the Tale of the Heike; more information about timing for that next week.

We continue to also offer audiobooks through Libro.fm. If you start a new membership with them using the code SHOPBOOKSTORESNOW, you will get two audiobooks for the price of one, and 100% of that sale will go to the store! It's a great way to pass the time if you're staying home, all while supporting your local indie.

We appreciate your support deeply, and we hope to provide you with your literary needs as best we can during this period.

Our Book of the Month for March is Docile, the debut novel of K. M. Szpara.

A propulsive and captivating read, this story takes place in a society where people can discharge their and their families' debts by placing themselves in servitude as a Docile to their creditors, after taking a drug that makes them not remember the horrors of their servitude. It's supposedly safe, but Elisha Wilder's mother didn't recover from her time as a Docile. So when he decides to sell himself, and ends up in the service of the scion of the company that made the drug, he doesn't take it... and is forced to struggle with his conditions and life. A searing tale of love, sex, power, and abuse, it holds a mirror up to our moment, as all the best dystopias do.

Content warning: Docile contains forthright depictions and discussions of rape and sexual abuse.

As always, the Book of the Month is offered at 15% off, while supplies last.
